CENTRAL INSTITUTE OF PSYCHIATRY - AN ELITE INSTITUTE FOR MENTAL HEALTH


Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, study, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various abnormalities related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions.

There are lot of universities in India that offering various courses in this area. But Central Institute of Psychiatry is one of the premier training centers in India for mental health professionals. The institute is directly governed by the Government of India. It is situated in Kanke, Ranchi in Jharkhand state of India. The institute is affiliated to Ranchi University.  Admission to the above said courses is through open advertisement in all the leading news papers. The candidates are selected for the admission by a selection committee constituted by the Director General of Health Services, New Delhi.

Usually the advertisement for admission will be appearing in October – November month.   All India Entrance will be conducted in third Sunday of February and admission will be on March.  The session will commence on first may.

Job Market in India

The job market in India is widening day by day because of the economic growth of the country. There are a lot of new job fields are developed after 1991. Certain new generation courses are also available now with the traditional ones.  Hence there are a lot of opportunities for qualified and hard working people now. But as far as the majority is concerned, job means a Govt. Job especially a Kerala Govt. Job. They don’t even want to face the challenges in the field.  Although younger generation has least interest in government jobs, still there is a large crowd who is aspiring for it. I have seen a lot of people those who work in the Govt. Service in the posts which is not par with their high academic qualifications and leading an unsatisfactory life, blaming the system and society.  They might have chosen that job because of the security concern or because of the peer pressure from the family and society.   It is very essential to find a job which is suitable to our qualification even if we accepted a low post by the pressure of our circumstances.  One thing we have to understand that success is not simply getting any job, instead getting the right job which we deserve in our life. 

In this scenario we can analyze the job market in India. We can classify the job market into three categories according to its characteristics.

1.      Service Sector
2.      Corporate Sector
3.      Research Sector

The abilities and competencies for these three categories are different.

1.      Service Sector
Public service is a service which is provided by government to people living within its jurisdiction, either directly through the public sector or by financing provision of services. The jobs directly or indirectly comes under the Central or State are mentioned here as service sector. All the departments, Boards, Corporations, Enterprises like KSFE, Govt. Universities, Courts, and Defense etc come under this. Mainly, State Public Service Commissions are tasked with recruitments in the state service. But in central govt., the Union Public Service Commission and Staff Selection Commission generally play this role. The public sector banks have their own recruiting procedures.

Job security is the main attraction of this sector. Whether the country is in great economic depression or milk & honey is flowing on the streets, it does not matter. In both circumstances, you will get your monthly salary on time. This is another advantage of this sector. Although the younger generation which is in college right now, is least interested in govt. job, a greater part of our society thinks that govt. job could be the best choice for their career. This thought is mainly due to the fact the career growth in the private sector depends entirely on your talent and hard work, whereas this is not the case with the Govt. sector. Moreover, regarding the nature of work, the government jobs are not much challenging. Any person can apply for these jobs from the age of eighteen according to their own qualification. Tests and interviews are the part of the recruitment.

Corporate Sector

The corporate sector is a section of the society consisting of Companies/Industries/Business houses. They are the industrial development side of our society. They contribute to National income generation, infrastructural growth and development of the economy. It is the backbone of our economy.  All the public and private sector companies are comes under this. Actually the majority of the professionals of this era intend to be the part of this sector.  Good communication skill and attractive personality are the essential competencies required for this field. The high salary package for highly skilled professionals is the main attraction of this sector. This sector gives a lot of opportunity for the professionals having high creativity.

But high work load and less job security are considered as the drawbacks of this sector.  In a private company if they find out that you are not doing your work properly then they will kick you out. Moreover, in private jobs there is also something called assessment. They assess you every week or month whether you are capable enough to continue the work you have been given. Another main risk is that, once your employer finds that there is someone who is willing to do your work with lesser wages, and then he is most likely to replace you unless you acquire some competency which the other guy does not have. Tests, Group discussion, group task and interviews are the part of the recruiting to this sector.

 

4.     Research sector

 

It is actually different from the above said fields. Most of the research institutions are working under central or state governments. All subjects have their own research fields. One has to write NET (National Eligibility Test) or GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) examination after completing one’s own post graduate degree for research. There are many prestigious research institutions in India.  Most of the institutions are the direct control of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) etc.  The Indian Defense has a number of research institutions like Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO).  All most all the state governments have their own research institutions. Even private players have a role to play in this area.

 

A more concrete benefit of working in research firms is the chance to rapidly improve your technical skills in a realistic setting outside the classroom. A sound knowledge in the chosen subject and willingness to work hard are the essential competencies required here. The people those who select this sector should be willing to study throughout their entire life span.


 It is better to understand the peculiarities of these fields after completing the tenth standard. It is also essential to understand our potential, taste to work and physical situations before choosing a career. It is a reality that no one is equally good at all these jobs.  So career is to be chosen not based on the scope in the job market but based on our potential. It is better to become an original cow than a duplicate tiger.

Courses and its Authorization


The present generation is running to turn their children into celebrities and billionaires. In this run, they are not recognizing many things. Accreditation of the courses is one among them. In case one completes a course and finds that his/her course is not recognized by any university/institution, he she ends up in great trouble, draining money and the most value time which can never be regained. Here, social status imparted by the job is valued above the taste of the child. This is the era of competition. This unhealthy competition may be more in education fields.

There are separate authorized agencies for each course. This authorization is not only for a particular course and institution but for conducting of a particular course in an institution. The authorization from the government agency is not a lifelong thing, but for a certain period after which the same has to be renewed by the concerned institution. This authorization is for a limited number of seats and the admission beyond that capacity is unauthorized. Another dimension as regards authorization is, ‘whether the course is full time or part time’. The concern in this direction has to go beyond authorization of a particular institute/course and extend to whether the university is authorized or not.

Council of Architecture is the authorized agency for Architecture related courses.  It is essential to get the authorization of this agency for working as a professional architect. You will get more details from the website www.coa.gov.in/.

One needs to check the authorization of Indian Medical council (www.mciindia.org/) for medical related courses and institutes. But the authorization Indian dental council (www.dciindia.org) is required for the courses and institutes offering dental courses.

The Bar Council of India is a statutory body created by Parliament to regulate and represent the Indian law professions. It promotes legal education and lays down standards of legal education. This is done in consultation with the Universities in India imparting legal education and the concerned State Bar Councils. It also recognizes Universities whose degree in law shall be a qualification for enrolment as an advocate. The Bar Council of India visits and inspects Universities, or directs the State Bar Councils to visit and inspect Universities for this purpose. The recognized agency for agricultural, agricultural engineering, horticulture etc is Indian council of agricultural research (www.icar.org.in/). The Veterinary Council of India (VCI) is a statutory body which regulates veterinary practice in India. Established under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of India in 1984, and based in New Delhi, the Council is governed by the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984. The National Council for Teacher Education, in its previous status since 1973, was an advisory body for the Central and State Governments on all matters pertaining to teacher education, with its Secretariat in the Department of Teacher Education of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). Despite its commendable work in the academic fields, it could not perform essential regulatory functions, to ensure maintenance of standards in teacher education and preventing proliferation of substandard teacher education institutions. www.ncte-india.org/ is the website of the council.

LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP


In this world we don’t have a lot of things to choose according to our will.  We don’t have freedom to select our family, parents, siblings even our name itself.  But for certain things that are crucial to our life we do have the freedom to select in which a career and a life partner etc. most outstanding.  

Most of the people don’t set their goals and they just flow with the wave and do name their destination as fate.  They mostly depend on luck or lucky breaks for success.  But some others choose their career according to the market trends.  No one in the world buys the slipper by simply walking into the shop rather he/she does take the size of the leg, quality, price, use etc. We select the slipper which is most suitable for our leg even if it is not the most beautiful one. It is a tragedy that we do not ascribe that much importance in selecting a career which we ascribe to select a slipper.
I have seen a lot of youngsters; they do have a high qualification and wish to have any government job which does not demand such high academics.  They consider a Government job as their goal, which in fact is not a real one. “There is no other course like engineering which offers a job after completing it”, an Engineering aspirant once told me. This is another misconception among parents and students.  Actually every course and profession has got its own scope in job market.  If a particular course is very good then all the students who completed that course must be well placed and if a particular course is worse none of the students who complete should be placed. But this never turns true.  It is high time to realize that the problem is not about the course, but about the way we perceive things during the selection of a particular course. The real trouble maker here is the fact that we never try to realize our potential and skills. What we see today is the huge flow of engineering graduates into the general banking sector as Officers and Clerks. The real comedy here is that none of these posts require an engineering degree as a mandatory qualification. Both these are posts that any graduate can compete for.
But real success is the outcome of a goal setting and wise planning to achieve them. Choosing a career path can help you to set professional goals and develop a strategy for getting where you want to be. Part of choosing an appropriate career path involves making an honest self-evaluation of your talents, abilities and interests. Actually our goal must be a smart one. The letters in the word SMART represents Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time bound.
Everyone is unique. Hence one must select one’s own career based on potential. Most people are one of the six personality types: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional.

Realistic
  • Likes to work with animals, tools, or machines; generally avoids social activities like teaching, healing, and informing others;
  • Has good skills in working with tools, mechanical or electrical drawings, machines, or plants and animals;
  • Values practical things you can see, touch, and use like plants and animals, tools, equipment, or machines
  • Sees self as practical, mechanical, and realistic.
Investigative
  • Likes to study and solve math or science problems; generally avoids leading, selling, or persuading people;
  • Is good at understanding and solving science and math problems;
  • Values science;
  • Sees self as precise, scientific, and intellectual.
Artistic
  • Likes to do creative activities like art, drama, crafts, dance, music, or creative writing; generally avoids highly ordered or repetitive activities;
  • Has good artistic abilities -- in creative writing, drama, crafts, music, or art;
  • Values the creative arts -- like drama, music, art, or the works of creative writers;
  • Sees self as expressive, original, and independent.
Social
  • Likes to do things to help people -- like, teaching, nursing, or giving first aid, providing information; generally avoids using machines, tools, or animals to achieve a goal;
  • Is good at teaching, counselling, nursing, or giving information;
  • Values helping people and solving social problems;
  • Sees self as helpful, friendly, and trustworthy.
Enterprising
  • Likes to lead and persuade people, and to sell things and ideas; generally avoids activities that require careful observation and scientific, analytical thinking;

Conventional

Keep in mind that none can fit exactly into any of the above mentioned categories, but can find his place among a combination of these categories. Understanding of our personality type is essential before choosing a career. This is the inevitable pre-requisite of success. None of us are destined to be suitable for all professions. It is always better to be master of a particular field rather than a ‘Jack of all trades’.
What we actually see today among students and their parents is the selection of courses without actually knowing their personality types. Priorities range from monetary concerns to social status. Most students are thinking that the best profession is the one which fetches more money to them for living a luxurious life. But while choosing a career we have to consider our potential, skills, family values, financial earnings from it, working environment, working time schedule, spiritual values etc. We should choose a career which balances the above mentioned factors.
